keep your xmas low-cal

i like today: doughnuts.

sure, cupcakes are hip and delicious but doughnuts are where it's at. my love for doughnuts started with imogene's antlers and continued when we would go for longjohn doughnuts when visiting my great grandmother, sneaking down to use the basement bathroom (you had to walk through the bakery kitchen) and rifle through the cake topper boxes. these days i like to keep mine simple and get them at the neighborhood bakery fresh from the oven: a warm and crispy cake doughnut with chocolate icing hits the spot every time. i'd even like to try my hand at making my own.

// edit // i just started to listen to the sporkful and recently those guys had a donut debate. listen to part one here.
// double edit // also i'm looking forward to trying the donut cooperative's wares, a new local doughnut joint that's using all natural, local, good for you ingredients (and doing them vegan style for those who need it).

here are a few ways to pull a homer but keep your christmas low-cal:

set of four mini doughnut ornaments from urban. (they've got big doughnut ornaments, too.)

felt donut magnets by danielle london.

realistic doughnut soap (chocolate scented!) by loveleesoaps.

decorate your tree with cashmere/wool knitted donuts from mrswoowoo.

ultimate hipster accessories: wipe your brow after that long (fixed gear) bike ride to the co-op with a sprinkles handkerchief, then stash your organic groceries in a double chocolate doughnut tote. both by avril loreti.
